It seems that Avatar is coming to 3-D blu-ray after all. After the jump, find out how you can get a copy.
The Digital Bits is reporting that Samsung has signed a deal with Fox for exclusive rights to Avatar 3-D later this year. As noted in Bill Hunt's piece about this, Samsung made a deal with Dreamworks earlier this year for Monsters vs Aliens 3-D. Monster vs Aliens 3-D is available exclusively with Samsung 3-D blu-ray players and Avatar 3-D will be available around the holidays, exclusively with Samsung blu-ray players.
To me this is not a strange thing. Samsung is really behind 3-D blu-ray and they have a lot to lose if it doesn't pan out. By having exclusive rights to the 3-D version of the highest grossing movie of all time, Samsung guaranteed to sell some units. How much they sell depends on how much people are willing to adopt an offshoot of a format that is still growing. I think that 3-D blu-ray will be for film fans only. People have already had to by a new tv and a new player to get blu-ray and I don't see the average person willing to shell out another $3000 just to see movies in 3-D.
I, for one, am not overly impressed with 3-D blu-ray. I find 3-D to be a gimmick and I don't think that it's popularity is going to go beyond film fans. I think that 3-D blu-ray with be a niche product like laserdisc was. But time and consumer awareness may prove me wrong, but I doubt it.
